LISTEN TO THE MUSIC PLAY

Teaspoon Sun, "We Came to Play"
"Self-described "Southern acid blues rock" outfit Teaspoon Sun makes music that speaks to their storied Southern rock heritage but never relies on any one genre for very long before moving on to the next in a series of rugged rhythmic extrapolations. Equal parts The Allman Brothers, Bruce Springsteen and Led Zeppelin, the band collects influences like vintage coins and runs them through a rustic melodic sieve before unleashing them onstage and across their records. You never know quite what you're going to hear from one moment to the next. Teaspoon Sun works these rhythms into something that pays homage to their inspirations but deftly carves out its own musical identity.

On their latest record, "We Came to Play," the band finds themselves working within the crossroads of their influences. This is the sound of a band confident in their own abilities and completely sure of how they want to interpret the music that has played such a large part in their individual formative musical experiences. Drums hit you in the gut while guitar riffs and bass lines slither within each of the songs' trajectories. It's Southern rock spiked with the whiskey-soaked desperation of the blues (and a slightly jazzy temperament). But Teaspoon Sun makes it all feel particularly inclusive, a hazy place where the shadows are both comforting and slightly unnerving."
